Unfortunately, most people in the West have no understanding of Buddhism at all. Once I was asked by a teacher of an A P class at a local high school to give a talk on Buddhism, and in his invitation, he said something like “Tell us how you worship Buddha.” But “worship” is a Western concept that has no equivalent in Buddhism at all. And unlike all of the Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam, et al.) you don’t have to “believe” anything to practice. In fact the very word “Buddhism” is a western coinage. The Buddha himself called it simply “Dharma practice” available to anyone. There’s no “us” and “them.”
