Well--yes and no. Free minds need bodies as their biological support system, and bodies need food, water, and specific temperature ranges to survive. Food needs healthy topsoil and a stable climate to grow, and topsoil health/climatic stability require intact and functioning ecosystems to regenerate. And these in turn require plentiful fresh water, whether from aquifers or precipitation. However, the combination of accelerating population growth x per capita resource consumption, coupled with ongoing pollution of land, air, and water and destruction of ecosystems--all in the service of "economic growth," threatens all of these prerequisites for free minds to mitigate or adapt to all of these predicaments confronting us. We can no longer ignore the fundamental contradiction between a global market economy predicated on endless growth of population, production, and consumption, on one hand, with a finite, biogenic, planetary life-support system on the other.
