When we visited Costa Rica on a Sierra Club trip some years ago, we found a delightful, ecologically intelligent country, which was a great relief from our own dysfunctional USA. But we also saw a huge number of real estate sale signs--in English! And I vividly remember seeing one bumper sticker that said it all about the local people's resentment of rich Americans buying up their land. It consisted of a map outline of Costa Rica, with a US flag superimposed on it, and the slogan was "Que Lastima!" (What a pity!) I agree. I would LOVE to live in Costa Rica, but I respect their right to their own beautiful country. Let's clean up our own act before exporting our toxic consumerism to other countries!
