While we know that the steep upward curve of “endless growth” of (fossil fuel-based) industrial civilization (and all of its correlates, such as population growth, technological innovation, pollution, economic expansion, etc. ) will peak and collapse far more quickly than the time it took to rise, there is little we can know beyond that.
It all depends on a vast array of unknowns. I don’t even know if Kamala or Trump will win the next election! Yet this could result in two vastly different downward trajectories: one overseen by reasonable, well-meaning people; the other, chaotic and seething in violence, mass denial, scapegoating, and civil strife.
Consider, for example, the vast difference in response to COVID between Jacinta Ardern (NZ) and Trump.
With her firm but open-hearted leadership, she protected nearly all of her population from the global plague, while Trump caused the unnecessary deaths of up to a million people in the US, due to his willful ignorance and contempt for scientific expertise. So even in calamity, wise leadership (or the staggering absence thereof) matters! If Trump is elected, hunker down and expect the worst; if Kamala wins, we MAY have a chance for a softer landing. But down the steep slope we will careen, regardless!
