Why would they have any self-awareness or "gut-felt emotion"? They have no guts, hence no vested interest in their own survival and propagation, hence no "selves" as we understand that vexed concept. All reasoning is only as sound as the major premises upon which it is based. And premises are ultimately pathetic--that is, rooted in feelings, rather than thoughts. Or in other words, rooted in soft bodies that already are self-programmed to preserve a complex set point called "survival and self-propagation." For all digital systems, conversely, premises are hardwired by their creators, not by the intrinsic logic of biological organisms and ecosystems. You will never design a smart bomb that has ethical qualms about destroying itself in the process of blowing up its target, if that purpose is built into the design algorithms.
