You may be right, sadly. But history shows that violent civil war seldom turns out well. Vast numbers of innocent people die horribly, and often the "winners"--even if they are the "good guys"--must become tyrants and fanatics in their own right in order to maintain power. Democracy and civil society? Forget it! It is a huge dilemma, since the parallels you draw with Weimar Germany and the rise of Hitler are entirely accurate.

The only alternative I see is Satyagraha--the practice of strategic and relentless nonviolent noncooperation with evil established by Gandhi, and replicated by MLK, Vaclav Havel, Nelson Mandela, Wangari Maathai, and a few others. The problem is, a Satyagraha campaign can only prevail if it has truly extraordinary charismatic leaders like these. Otherwise, once the shooting starts, the gates of Hell have opened, and all bets are off for any peaceful future at all.
